General Atomics Internship 2015-2016
A blog about my Junior year internship at General Atomics! Includes reflections, day to day things, and pictures of my experiences. (Although, my gallery is limited, GA has a strict no photo policy.)
Things are going very well at General Atomics so far. My mentor, Justin is what he would call a "down to earth guy". I worked on putting some parts into a library for a design program, but I have mainly been shadowing Justin to learn as much as possible. I was really nervous to start this internship but now I'm pretty much okay.
The only issue I am having is keeping up with the math, I spent a large portion of my day on Khan Academy, refreshing myself on everything between Algebra 1 and 2. Much of it I know concretely, and other things I have forgotten. I am very excited to continue my internship at General Atomics an I will hopefully be spending a day at the Poway facility to see the magnets for the ITER nuclear fusion reactor. Can't wait!

There's one day left before I start going to General Atomics for my internship. I'm really excited to see how the work environment is, Justin seemed to have a generally independent workspace and I want to see if that is true. The thing I'm most worried about is my commute on the way home. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I'll be taking 1hr and 40min of public transit to get home. That makes me nervous because I am not used to commuting that way.
Today was an eventful day! I went to General Atomics for the first time and met my mentor, Justin Stricula. He came off as more energetic and young than I expected him to be, which is good because I wouldn't have enjoyed being mentored by some monotone, boring guy. The projects he is working on are interesting, though I would have to be recounted on what they were for me to even begin describing them. That may sound like an issue, the complexity of the projects I will be working on possibly too high, but I find it to be a very good thing.
I don't quite have an idea of what project I will want to work on while I am there, but I hope it has to do with coding. Justin explained the different programming languages and the way you would begin to learn coding, it sounds very interesting. I suppose I'll decide the specifics once I begin shadowing his work in January! |
