There is a national epidemic of depression spreading through neighborhoods, schools, and cities. While I may sound like I am exaggerating, there really is an epidemic of depression spreading through the country. Horwitz from the Psychiatric Times says “depression is diagnosed in about 40% of patients who see a psychiatrist. This percentage is double that of just 20 years ago, and it is far higher than that of any other diagnosis.” The sad truth is, more and more young adults and adolescents are experiencing depressive disorders. Something to shine light on is the fact that there is often no evidence of depression until they enter school (Ana Vilela Mendes, et al). Depression can make you feel unmotivated, discouraged around others, socially unstable, and even suicidal. You may believe there is no help besides medication, but there are many things you can do to keep depression at bay.
Although this project is about happiness, there are always dark sides to good things. Something to realize is that without sadness, you would not be able to tell the difference between the good and the bad. If you are experiencing depressive disorders, you can try many solutions from flow activities to eating differently. People don’t realize this, but there are many chemicals and additives that cause your brain to secrete glutamate, a nasty hormone that causes depression and anxiety (Ana Vivela Mendes, et al).
If you keep away from eating foods that contain a large amount of glucose and high fructose corn syrup, you should see an effect on your mental health. Another solution of depression is to find something to keep you distracted that you experience flow in. This activity could be writing, going out on a date, playing sports, anything that makes you happy.
Everyone has experienced depression sometime in their life.I was severely depressed from the age of eleven until the age of fourteen. I know how it feels to feel unwanted, or outcasted. my solution to depression was guitar. Guitar makes me feel like I’m in a different place, and I become so engaged in the flow of the music that I don’t remember I’m supposed to be depressed. Just like me, you can find something you truly love doing and focus on it, it will distract you. If you keep to whatever it is you decided you love doing, eventually you'll realize that you’re not even as depressed as you were.
